A number of small groups are available to students at Marshall Elementary. The following groups are tentatively planned for the 2009-2010 school year:
Newcomers: is a peer support group for students that are new to Marshall. Group topics include how to make friends and strategies to adjust to a new school.
Banana Splits: is a peer support group for students who are (or have experienced) parent separation and/or divorce. Group topics include how to handle common feelings associated with parent separation and/or divorce, coping strategies, and building communication within family.
Salvaging Sisterhood: This 5th grade group lends support for peer relationships. Its focus is to teach friends to communicate effectively with one another. Group topics include: exploring feelings, developing empathy, teaching healthy conflict resolution, and promoting positive change in female relationships.
Friendly Faces is an interactive support group that helps students practice friendly behaviors. Group topics include: who can be your friend, how to show someone you would like to be friends, how to handle bosses and bullies, the best way to be a friend and not be a friend, and ways to settle an argument with a friend.
"It's Hard to Be Five!" is an interactive social skills group for stduents in kindergarten or first grade. Group topics include: sharing, taking turns, expressing feelings and emotions in an appropriate manner, learning how to use "I" statements and how to get along with others.
Ambassadors of Change: is a preventative support group for fifth grade boys to learn and teach others about effective communication and about creating an environment of respect and understanding. Group topics focus on increasing positive peer relationships through enhanced self-esteem, respecting differences, developing empathy and healthy conflict resolution.
All groups will be completed by May 1, 2010
